    Seminars concerning typography, communication and publishing issues:


    17-20 March 2004:
    Seminar on typography and visual communication 
    The seminar with the theme "Typographic tradition and history - A present day tool for visual communication", took place at the conference hall of the university from Wednesday 17 till Saturday 20 March. Thirty participants had the chance to discuss issues such as:
    • What does typography mean,
    • Why is still valid the knowledge about the theory of typography and the history of graphic communication nowadays,
    • How do we plan the graphic language,
    • Problems and corrections on printed matters,
    • Understanding graphic conventions,
    • In which way the new technologies affect the typographic outcome.

    The lectures by Klimis Mastoridis, Director of the UomPress, were followed by a media graphics presentation for ANT1 TV delivered by alterVision.

    98% of the participants filled in a questionnaire stating that they would strongly suggest the seminar to friends and colleagues.

    9-11 June 2003: Seminar with the theme "Typography and modern technologies", organized by the UOMPress in cooperation with the Institute of Mass Media Communication of Intercollege, Nicosia, Cyprus, and with the support of the Greek Embassy in Cyprus and the Ministry of Education and Culture of Cyprus. 
    Dr Klimis Mastoridis, Director of the UOMPress, has taught in this 3 day-seminar attended by 50 people (students and professionals in the fields of typography, graphic design, mass media etc). Some of the topics discussed during the seminar were: from the manuscript to the printed document, tools for the organization of the message to be published, usefulness of the theory of typography and the history of graphic communication into the contemporary practice, new technologies and the ways in which they affect the fields of design, and new technologies and modern directions into the typographic field. 
    In parallel, two exhibitions were organized: one with the theme "Typography and Art" with the participation of teachers from the Dept of Graphic Design of Intercollege and another concerning editions about typography, the history of the book and of the Press. 

    27 February 2002: Seminar about the publishing procedures with the title "From the manuscript to the printed document" adressed by Dr Klimis Mastoridis and attended by employees and students of the University of Macedonia. 

    Book presentations and participations in national events:

    23 May - 8 June 2003: Participation in the 22nd Thessaloniki Book
    Festival, organized by the Publishers' Association of Northern Greece. For the first time the UOMPress participated in this event with its own stand, where the new editions and the multiple activities of our University Press attracted a large number of visitors.


    Help desks for University students:

    Spring 2003: the organization of a help desk at the ground floor of the University of Macedonia offered the opportunity to University students and employees to get acquainted with the older and new titles published by the UOMPress, as well as with its activities (special services, forthcoming events etc).

    Meetings and Conferences:

    28-29 March 2003: The UOMPress organized the "1st Panhellenic Meeting of the Greek University Presses", with the theme "University Presses: Past - Present - Future" at the University of Macedonia. 
    Among those who addressed the meeting were: Prof. Paul Luna, Dept of Typography & Graphic Communication, Univ. of Reading, U.K., the Directors of the University Presses of Crete, Patras, Thessalia, the Polytechnical School of Athens and the University of Macedonia, as well as the Directors of the National Book Centre of Greece and the Cultural Centre of the National Bank of Greece.

    26-30 June 2002: The UOMPress in collaboration with altervision ltd
    organized the
    "1st International Conference on Typography and Visual Communication, History - Theory - Education", at the University of Macedonia, Thessaloniki. Many well-known academics, designers and experts on typography and visual communication from all over the world have participated in this important event.
